Maternity Photoshoot in a Daisy Field, Canterbury – A Growing Family on a Balmy Summer’s Eve

What do you think of when summer comes to mind? I think of strawberry juice running down my childrens chins whilst they gleefully pick fruit in an orchard in Kent. I think of fields of wildflowers and bare toddler legs in bloomers, newly forming ringlets bouncing from under sunhats and the smell of suncream from earlier in the day. Golden sunsets over the most picturesque secluded outdoor spots in Canterbury. For this family this shoot evokes the nostalgia of just before they grew from an all girl-family to having their first son join them. Together we roamed the daisy fields in Canterbury, Kent, as the sun dwindled behind the trees and made the soft summer grasses glow.

Why Have a Maternity or Family Photoshoot in the Daisy Fields of Canterbury, Kent?

A family maternity session in some of Canterbury’s hidden daisy fields during June and into July is a dreamy way to capture this special season of pregnancy and the anticipation of a growing family. Here’s why it’s the perfect choice:

Who is this for?

  • Expecting mothers wanting to celebrate their pregnancy in a natural, serene setting.

  • Families welcoming a new baby, capturing the bond between parents and siblings.

  • Couples cherishing their last moments before their little one arrives.

  • Anyone who loves golden light, wildflowers, and the timeless beauty of nature.

What makes it special?

  • A backdrop of wild beauty – The daisy fields in June are in full bloom, creating a soft, cinematic, romantic setting. In golden hour or grey skies there is nothing that can stop the beauty of the fresh grasses, daisies and awe of children.

  • Golden hour magic – The warm, hazy glow of the evening sun adds a dreamy touch to your images if you can make it out late.

  • A relaxed, intimate atmosphere – all of my photoshoots are prompted and guided leaving space for your natural unique personalities to shine through and keep your children connecting with you so we capture emotive images.

When is the best time?

  • Mid-Late June and into July – The daisies are at their peak, stretching across the fields in a sea of white, speckled with sheeps sorrel and buttercups.

  • Golden hour (just before sunset) – The soft, golden light enhances the warmth and depth of your photos. My biggest tip for summer sessions is give the kids a late nap, have dinner on the way, make an adventure of getting changed in the car and enjoy a magical one-off sunset together. The visceral nostalgia this brings to mind for me personally - home in the car as the skies start to darken, in our pyjamas, minds alight with imagination with my siblings. Remember a photoshoot is just as much about the experience, so if you can manage sunset; great! If you think it’s not for your family, thats ok too.

  • Early morning (for a fresh, dewy look) – If you prefer cooler tones or have really early risers theres simply nothing more magical than arriving at the fields before the sun peaks over the horizon.

Why choose Canterbury?

  • Breathtaking countryside – Kent’s natural landscapes provide a peaceful escape from the busy city.

  • Rich history & charm – Combine your session with a wander through Canterbury’s historic streets - many of my clients choose to make a weekend of their shoot especially if they’re travelling from London and beyond.

  • A personal, meaningful location – If Kent is home, these fields could become part of your family’s story, you can visit them year after year and make a tradition of daisy crowns and afternoon tea or a summer fruit picnic and play on the rope swings.

  • A moment to pause – A maternity session isn’t just about photos; it’s a chance to slow down and savour the anticipation. Life with little ones can be so full on - don’t worry, as a mum of 3 myself I totally understand how the second, third and even sixth pregnancy can just fly by. It’s so important to breath in even an hour dedicated to honouring this baby before they arrive. To share the excitement with big brothers and sisters about who their new sibling will be.

A Moment for Mama

During family maternity shoots we will always step aside to let the kids (and Dad) take a break and exploring freely so we can really embody where you are in your pregnancy, connect you with our baby and capture some portraits of JUST YOU. It’s important. Even if it feels differently. Each pregnancy is its own moment, its own unique version of you and every unique soul that is joining your family.
